Take a second tile and then place it directly next to the first tile using the spacers as a guide. Sometimes your room is square; and, in that case, I would run the tiles parallel to the entrance of the room, so that when you walk in you walk across the pattern laid out horizontally.
Lay bathroom wall tiles horizontally when you want your space to look wider horizontally. If you have a limited floor space but a tall bathroom, you might like to choose this option.
It will visually open up the space, giving you the illusion that the space is wider and longer than it actually is. The most common way to lay hardwood flooring is by aligning the planks parallel to the longest wall. Apart from a few exceptions like sagging joists, this is the preferred direction to lay wood floors because it aesthetically provides the best result.
The trick is in spending a little more time and effort while measuring and marking the chalk lines before you begin installation. Diagonal tile patterns require more measuring and cutting around the perimeter of the room as well. Once you have everything measured, marked and cut, installation of the tiles is a cinch. Install the appropriate underlayment for your floor type and area.
After installation, sweep the floor to remove any dust and debris. Find the midpoint of each wall and mark them with a light pencil mark on the floor. Center a chalk line between the midpoint marks on each set of opposing walls and snap it. The intersection of the lines is the center of the floor. Temporarily hammer a nail into each of the four points, A through D. Tie a 4-foot piece of string to each nail. Tie a pencil to the opposite end of the string, stretch it straight out from the line and draw an arc.
Repeat this for the opposite direction. For example, for point A you would stretch the line north and south to draw both arcs. Repeat this process with all four points. Your arcs will intersect each other, leaving you four new points on the floor. Snap a new chalk line that intersects two opposing arc points and the center of the room to create a diagonal line. Repeat for the second diagonal line.
Just use a damp sponge to wipe it away. Step back, take it all in, and admire your handiwork. Now that you see how well this tile floor turned out, you might even get inspired to try a few other creative tile projects in other rooms of the house.
