The speaker volume for the microphone and line-in may be muted or turned down. Use the following steps to check the speaker volume levels for line-in and microphone. You may find that a front microphone port does not work, a recording device is missing from the recording tab, a microphone is not recognized when it is plugged in, or other problem. There may be updated audio drivers that can fix these types of issues.

Use the following steps to make sure audio drivers are up to date. By default, Windows Vista automatically enables microphones and line-in ports.

On Device Manager screen, click on the down arrow next to Audio inputs and outputs to expand Audio inputs entry.

Next, right-click on Microphone and click on the Enable option in contextual menu. It should be enabled by default. You will see a selection for " Adjust Volume For " at the top. Select Recording. If it is not already there, put a check mark in the box next to Microphone. Select OK. Your Volume Control should now have the slider for the Microphone.

Make sure it is selected and not muted, and then try adjusting the level higher. Note: The microphones on these systems are not designed for things such as Voice Over IP, Speech Recognition, or other similar applications. If you wish to use these programs, it is strongly recommended that you purchase an external microphone that is recommended by the software manufacturer.

Message Edited by Romzy on PM. Essentially, if you do not have one of these devices attached to your sound card or USB port , you don't have an external mic. Internal microphones, as the name implies, are built into the body of a laptop, or the bezel of a computer monitor or laptop screen.

You can find them by physically examining the hardware and looking for a few small holes that are close to one another. However, we find it easiest to confirm with software.
